Nishi Patel

National Director of Cardiac Imaging

Dr. Nishi Patel, M.D., is a distinguished cardiovascular specialist who has emerged as a leader in both clinical and telemedicine-based heart care in the United States. He primarily practices at WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, where he dedicates his career to evaluating and treating some of the most complex forms of heart disease, with a focus on advanced heart failure and critical care for the heart. Dr. Patel’s approach combines the most sophisticated therapies available with a deeply personal commitment to keeping care accessible and close to home for his patients.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Patel serves as the National Director of Cardiac Imaging for Access Physicians/SOC Telemedicine (now Access TeleCare), a pioneering multispecialty telemedicine group. In this role, he leads innovative cardiac imaging initiatives, including echocardiography and cardiac CT imaging, that are making expert-level cardiac diagnostics more accessible to patients in rural and underserved communities. His leadership in telehealth has been instrumental in transforming care delivery models, ensuring that even the most remote hospitals can offer the same high standards of diagnosis and treatment as leading urban centers.

Education, Training, and Certification

Dr. Patel’s academic journey began at Drexel University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Arts & Sciences in 2009. He continued his education at Drexel University College of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2013. Dr. Patel completed his Internship and Residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he laid the foundation for his career in internal medicine and cardiology.

Seeking more profound expertise, he went on to complete rigorous fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Patel’s dedication to lifelong learning and excellence is further demonstrated by his extensive board certifications: Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, Echocardiography, Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT), and Nuclear Cardiology.

Clinical Innovations and Patient-Centered Care

At WellSpan York Hospital, Dr. Patel is at the forefront of advanced heart failure management. He leads a team that provides lifesaving interventions—such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Impella, and left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)—to patients experiencing critical heart failure or awaiting heart transplantation. Under his guidance, the hospital has expanded its capabilities to provide nuanced, personalized care, enabling patients to receive advanced therapies in their local communities instead of traveling long distances to tertiary centers. This approach not only enhances quality of life but also reduces overall healthcare costs and hospital readmissions.

One of Nishi Patel’s hallmark achievements is the creation of a comprehensive congestive heart failure center in central Pennsylvania. His initiatives ensure continuity of care across the entire patient journey, from critically ill ICU patients to those in recovery and rehabilitation. He is actively developing a specialized clinic for cardiogenic shock survivors to help patients address the physical and psychological aftermath of severe cardiac events. He promotes preventive care through remote monitoring technology, such as CardioMEMS, to keep patients healthy and reduce the need for hospitalization. Dr. Patel has also established innovative protocols for conducting virtual and molecular autopsies on sudden cardiac death victims, offering surviving family members insight into genetic risks and contributing to broader community health education.

Expanding Access Through Telemedicine

Beyond his local impact, Dr. Patel is nationally recognized for his commitment to expanding subspecialty cardiovascular care through the use of telemedicine. Early in his career, he recognized telehealth as a vital tool for addressing care gaps in rural and underserved areas. As National Medical Director of Cardiac Imaging for Access TeleCare, Dr. Patel leads initiatives that deliver state-of-the-art cardiac imaging and diagnostic expertise to hospitals that might otherwise lack access to these services. His work ensures that geography is no longer a barrier to world-class heart care, and he continues to innovate in this space by developing new models of remote care delivery.

Research, Academia, and Publications

Dr. Patel’s contributions extend to the academic and research realms. His early research in Dr. Harpreet Singh’s laboratory focused on animal models of heart failure, with several publications on echocardiography techniques and the role of ion channel mutations in cardiac disease. His current research addresses pressing topics, including percutaneous ventricular assist devices, advanced heart failure therapies, cardiac transplant outcomes, and the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiac protection. His work has been published in leading journals, including a recent article in the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal, and he has presented abstracts at top cardiology and transplant conferences worldwide.

Notably, Dr. Patel was awarded the Zoll Foundation Research Grant to further his investigations into precision medicine and genomics as they relate to sudden cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock. He serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Cardiology and Cardiac CT sections at StatPearls and is a peer reviewer for prominent medical journals.

Commitment to Education and Service

A dedicated educator, Dr. Patel holds an Associate Professor appointment at Drexel University College of Medicine and is a frequent lecturer for medical students, residents, and fellows at WellSpan and beyond. He has been honored with the Golden Apple Award by Drexel medical students, a testament to his mentorship and teaching excellence.

Dr. Patel is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the International Society of Heart & Lung Transplantation, the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and the Heart Failure Society of America. He also dedicates his time to charitable organizations, including the International Esperanza Project and the World Surgical Foundation.

Outside the Clinic

When not practicing medicine, Dr. Patel enjoys martial arts, including Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and finds balance through outdoor activities. His holistic approach to life is reflected in his dedication to both his patients and personal well-being.

Through clinical innovation, academic excellence, and compassionate care, Dr. Nishi Patel continues to shape the future of cardiovascular medicine, improving lives across communities both near and far.
